Johnny Depp Denied Permission To Appeal In ‘Wife Beater Libel’ Case; UK Court REJECTS His Bid To Overturn The Ruling
Johnny Depp has reportedly been denied permission to appeal in his high-profile libel case against the publishers of The Sun tabloid newspaper
Johnny Depp has been involved in a court battle regarding the high-profile libel case against the publishers of The Sun tabloid newspaper. According to the latest update, a British court has denied Johnny Depp the permission to appeal a judge’s ruling that he assaulted his ex-wife Amber Heard, reports the Associated Press. The Pirates Of The Caribbean star had lost the libel case in November 2020, over a 2018 newspaper article that called him a 'wife beater'. The actor’s bid to overturn the British libel ruling was to be heard on Thursday. However, he has been refused permission to appeal, and his bid to overturn the ruling has been rejected.
According to the report in Associated Press, two Court of Appeal judges said that the earlier court hearing was ‘full and fair’. Additionally they also stated that the conclusions ‘have not been shown even arguably to be vitiated by any error of approach or mistake of law.’ The judges, therefore, declared that Johnny Depp cannot challenge the High Court’s rejection of his lawsuit against the publisher of The Sun newspaper.
It was in November last year that High Court Justice Andrew Nicol had said that The Sun had proved that allegations mentioned in the article were ‘substantially true’. The judge had reportedly found that Johnny Depp assaulted Heard on 12 occasions.
According to a report in variety.com, Johnny Depp had earlier claimed that Amber Heard’s allegations were a ‘choreographed hoax’. He had reportedly sought permission to appeal the November verdict in the libel lawsuit, and claimed that he didn’t get a fair trial.
